CLOTA VISITS 1930's BERLIN IN CABARET

As soon as the lights go up on the Community Light Opera and Theater Association's production of "Cabaret" early next month, audiences will be mesmerized as they are thrust into the precarious world that was Germany in the 1930's. The iconic musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1966, was the brainchild of songwriters John Kander and Fred Ebb and their librettist Joe Masteroff. Kander and Ebb are the songwriting team responsible for musicals such as "Chicago" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and for writing "New York, New York" which became Frank Sinatra's signature song.

Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, "Cabaret" focuses on nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the charismatic English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. The story was based on John Van Druten's 1951 play "I Am a Camera," which had been adapted from Christopher Isherwood's 1946 novel "The Berlin Stories."

The creators of "Cabaret" clearly knew that there is something terribly poignant about stories set at pivotal moments in history as the characters continue with their previous ways - some recognizing the changing tide and others stubbornly refusing to believe that the only world they know will be gone forever. With such an engaging backstory and such fantastic songs, it is no surprise that "Cabaret" won eight Tony awards in 1967 and the 1972 film version took home eight Academy Awards including Best Actress for Liza Minnelli, Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey and Best Director for Bob Fosse. For over 40 years, audiences the world over have been mesmerized by Cabaret's juxtaposition of the wild abandon within the nightclub and the grim rise of fascism outside its garishly decorated walls. Now the people of Ridgecrest can experience the rousing, yet darkly disturbing musical that made Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey household names. Friday, August 6 is opening night for "Cabaret" at CLOTA's Center Stage, 1425 N. Inyo.

All tickets are special-priced that evening at $8.00. Doors open at 7:00, and lights go up at 7:30. Subsequent evening performances will take place August 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21. A Sunday matinee (also discounted to $8.00) is planned for Sunday, August 15; doors open at 1:30, lights-up at 2:00. Tickets are now on sale at Red Rock Books. Regular prices are $12 general admission and $10 for seniors, students, enlisted active-duty military and CLOTA members. For more information, call the CLOTA Hotline: 446-2411.
